Use mission-led public procurement to help public services, defence and strategic industries explore quantum advantage before global markets lock in.
Scaling Advantage:
How Quantum Will Power the UK’s Next Industrial Era
BUILDING THE QUANTUM-AI FUTURE
Quantum computing is no longer a distant scientific ambition. It is a critical capability for productivity, national security and sovereign digital infrastructure.
The UK has already built one of the world’s strongest quantum ecosystems through sustained public investment, world-class research and a growing commercial sector. The opportunity now is to translate that leadership into real-world adoption, economic value and strategic advantage.
Oxford Economics estimates that successful adoption of quantum computing could increase UK economy-wide productivity by 7% by 2045. If the UK accelerates commercialisation and adoption, the impact could arrive sooner, an accelerated scenario could deliver an 8% productivity uplift by 2040.
The race is now about deployment. The countries that move fastest from research to operational quantum capability will be best placed to capture the economic, industrial and security benefits.
OQC: UK-built quantum leadership
Founded as an Oxford University spinout in 2017 and headquartered in the UK, OQC builds application-optimised quantum computers designed for real-world deployment. Our systems are engineered for secure access, commercial integration and as a clear path to useful quantum applications.
OQC was the first to deploy quantum computers in commercial data centres, giving customers ultra-low-latency access to quantum compute and to partner with Nvidia and AMD to integrate with AI and high-performance computing environments within these colocation datacentres.
OQC is proud to be the UK leader in quantum computing, scaling world-class British science into globally competitive infrastructure. OQC recently closed its £260 million series C, the largest private capital raise in Europe for in quantum, reflecting the strength of UK technology, its team and its commercial ambition.
THE UK IS BACKING QUANTUM
The UK Government has committed £2 billion to quantum technologies, supporting research, applications, commercialisation and adoption.
This investment has helped establish the UK as a global quantum leader. The next phase must focus on adoption: turning public funding into public procurement, operational infrastructure and measurable outcomes across government and strategic sectors.
To capture the opportunity, the UK should:
Procure first, prove value early
Fund infrastructure, not isolated pilots
Support quantum systems in trusted data centres, integrated with high-performance computing, AI supercomputing environments and secure cloud access.
Keep the scale-up path in Britain
Use patient growth capital, public-private partnerships and export support to keep IP, infrastructure and high-value jobs anchored in the UK.
Build adoption skills across industry
Develop quantum-literate teams in finance, life sciences, energy, defence and advanced manufacturing so value is realised alongside hardware capability.
Bringing Forward the UK’s Quantum Advantage
Oxford Economics modelled materially different outcomes depending on when commercially viable quantum computing is achieved. UK Government policy can help bring the curve forward and ensure the UK realises all the benefits of quantum computing.
