Ethics, all too often, takes a reactive backseat in the face of waves of new industrial and technological change. We often consider the effects of new technologies after they have already been adopted and after we’ve seen the problems these new technologies have created.
A group of quantum computing experts, including scientists and industry executives, are sounding the alarm on the ethical implications of quantum technology. In a 13-minute video “Quantum Ethics: A Call to Action,” released by Quantum Daily, they raise concerns about the potential misuse of quantum computing, such as harmful manipulation of the human genome and the development of materials for war. Among those featured in the video are John Martinis, former chief scientist of quantum hardware at Google, and our very own Dr. Ilana Wisby, CEO of OQC, who stress the importance of initiating conversations about the ethical dimensions of quantum technology.
QUANTUM ETHICS | A CALL TO ACTION
As quantum computers have the potential to revolutionise industries like drug discovery, finance, and materials science, it is crucial to anticipate the ethical challenges that may arise. Companies and governments worldwide are investing heavily in quantum technology, but without proper ethical guidelines, there’s a risk of misuse.
Matt Swayne, editor at the Quantum Daily, intends to establish an advisory group to delve deeper into quantum ethics. By initiating discussions early on, the industry can ensure that the benefits of quantum technology are maximized while safeguarding against potential harms.
