Setting the standard in qubit manufacturing

At OQC, we are working diligently to revolutionise the production of our chips, to continue enhancing control over their performance. Our ability to deliver high-quality chips is rooted in our unrivalled expertise, proprietary design and bespoke fabrication processes.

All of our final products are tested to ensure that every chip meets our performance and quality standards. Our quantum chips, and surrounding design choices, make our systems resilient to non-laboratory environments, providing the optimum conditions to merge quantum computing into pre-existing HPC infrastructures.

Design and Fabrication

The fabrication of superconducting qubits involves multiple steps and processes to go from blank wafer to a viable quantum processor. The processes and techniques require the highest level of selectivity, efficiency and precision especially when generating commercially viable components.

Precision manufacturing

A key aspect of achieving quantum advantage is the ability to deliver performance alongside scale (number of qubits) which requires a large number of well-controlled Josephson Junctions (JJs). As is necessary for classical computing, multi-level systems in quantum compute require two addressable levels which are created through nonlinear JJs.

Our fabrication engineers are making tangible steps towards mitigating the challenges typically encountered with JJs. By refining elements such as this, we have demonstrated that we can continuously improve our capability of reproducing high performance superconducting qubits.

Post-fabrication precise control

To further scale quantum processors, individual qubit frequencies must be improved to ensure high gate fidelities. To achieve this we are focused on the fabrication of JJs because their lateral dimensions and the thickness of their barrier can affect the qubit frequency. Our fabrication team has developed e-beam tuning as a technique for reducing qubit frequency variability in order to enhance quantum processing unit (QPU) performance in our quantum computers.

When applied to a wafer of our QPUs, we were able to significantly reduce resistance spread (less than 1.5%) minimising expected frequency collisions and increasing the yield of viable QPUs. By integrating this technique into our existing fabrication workflows, we can further improve qubit frequency allocation, reduce frequency collisions, and ultimately further improve the scalability and reliability of our technology.

Superconducting qubits have evolved to become a leading modality in quantum compute, thanks to their unique potential for scalability and integration.
